Packing For the Island

The key word here is EFFICIENT! Each passenger is allowed to bring 3 luggage items on the ferry; this includes coolers, storage bins, suitcases, duffel bags, backpacks, or any vessel that can keep all of your stuff contained. There is a 50-lb weight limit per item, so plan accordingly. You will need to purchase an Oversized Baggage ticket for items that are deemed larger than normal.

If you need to purchase new luggage or bins to bring with you, we highly recommend the following or similar:
Duffel Bags
Backpack Cooler
Chest Cooler
Plastic Storage Bins

Clothing, Food, & Other Considerations

It’s very easy to overpack for your first trip to BHI — especially when it comes to clothing. The reality is, you need very little for a week on the island! If you’ve gotten guest memberships to either of the clubs, plan on bringing appropriate attire for golf, tennis, and dining; otherwise, all you need are bathing suits and casual clothes to lounge around in!

The house has a fully-equipped kitchen, perfect for cooking as much or as little as you’d like while on vacation. We recommend bringing most of your groceries from the mainland, if possible. Maritime Market (which also offers catering) and several dining establishments exist on the island, but the selection is limited and prices can be high!

Beer and wine are available at the Market and Bald Head Bottle, while Cape Fear Distillery operates a boutique in the same area. One thing to note: open containers aren't permitted in golf carts or vehicles on island roads, so save the adult beverages for the beach!

Beyond that, pack light and leave room in your car for the cooler! Just remember that everything coming to the island travels with you on the ferry, so a little planning goes a long way.
